Auckland Belediye Binasında düzenlenen bir törende, Başbakan Ardern, 1974-1976 yıllarında göçmen işçilerin etnik kökenleri hedef alınarak düzenlenen şafak baskınlarına ilişkin açıklamalarda bulundu.
Ardern, Pasifik Okyanusu’ndaki ada ülkelerinden göçmen işçi olarak ülkeye gelip, “ırkçılık temelli şafak baskınları”na maruz kalanlardan özür diledi.
Ardern, şafak baskınları, rastgele uygulanan polis kontrollerinden ve bu eylemlerin normal olarak görülmesinden üzüntü, vicdan azabı ve pişmanlık duyduğunu ifade etti.
Açıklamasında, baskınların neredeyse 50 yıl önce yaşandığını ancak kalıntılarının devam ettiğini belirten Ardern, baskınların doğrudan etkilenen kişilerin hafızasında yer edindiğini aktardı.
“Bir özür, olanları tersine çeviremez”
Ardern, hükümetin Pasifik toplulukları için yeni eğitim ve öğretim hibelerini finanse edeceğini, yazılı kayıtlardan ve sözlü bilgilerden baskınların resmi bir raporunun derlenmesine yardımcı olacağını söyledi.
Ardern daha önce de “Bir özür, olanları veya yol açılan zararı asla tersine çeviremez ancak bunu kabul edebilir ve bir yanlışı düzeltmeye çalışabiliriz.” ifadesini kullanmıştı.
Yeni Zelanda’daki “şafak baskınları”
Pasifik’teki ada ülkelerden Samoa ve Tonga’dan çok sayıda kişi 1950 ve 1960’lı yıllarda Yeni Zelanda’ya göçmen işçi olarak gelmişti.
Ülkede 1970’lerde ekonomideki olumsuz gidişat ve artan işsizliğin etkisiyle Yeni Zelanda polisi, göçmen işçilerden vize süresi dolanların evlerine ve iş yerlerine şafak vakitlerinde baskın düzenlemiş ve ülkede yasa dışı bulundukları belirlenen göçmenleri sınır dışı etmişti.
Polisin, etnik kökenlerinden dolayı hedef aldığı göçmenlere yönelik fiziksel ve sözlü şiddet içeren ve “ırkçı” olarak nitelendirilen bu eylemleri, 1976’ya kadar devam etmişti.
Yeni Zelanda hükümeti, 1977’de vize sürelerini aşanlarla ilgili prosedürleri, polis baskınlarının tekrarlanmaması amacıyla değiştirmişti.
Polis baskınlarının en çok yaşandığı Auckland’da halihazırda kendini “Pasifikli” olarak tanımlayan 200 bin civarında kişi bulunuyor.
